Summer Olympic Games

The history of the ancient Olympics dates from 776 BC, when it was celebrated in summer at four year intervals in honour of Zeus. The games were later suppressed by Roman emperor Theodosius I in about AD 393.
In the late 19th century, the concept of the Olympic Games was revived. At the 1896 Athens Olympic Games athletes from 14 nations competed, with the largest delegations coming from France, Germany and Greece.
In 1921, the IOC decided to stage ‘International Sports Week 1924’ in Chamonix, France. The event was so successful that it was retroactively named the ‘First Olympic Winter Games’. Athletes from 16 nations took part in the games.
