The Commonwealth Games were initially known as the
British Empire Games (From 1930 to 1950). From 1954, their name was modified to
‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’ the name being retained till 1962, from
1966 to 1974 they took on the title ‘British Commonwealth Games’ and from 1978 onwards
they were finally renamed the ‘Commonwealth Games’. In 1930, the first
Commonwealth Games were held at Hamilton, Canada where 400 athletes from, 11
countries took part. Since 1930, the Games have been conducted at four years
intervals excepting 1942 and 1946, because of World War II. In the 2014 Glasgow
Commonwealth games India stood in the 5th place
