Time and Distance

SSC CGL Exam Previous Asked Questions with Explanations

1) Sarita and Julie start walking from the same place in the opposite directions. If Julie walks at a speed of 2½ kmph and Sarita at a speed of 2 kmph, in how much time will they be 18 km a part? [SSC CGL Exam 20/07/2014]

          a) 4.0 hrs

          b) 4.5 hrs

          c) 5.0 hrs

          d) 4.8 hrs

Sarita and Julie Speed is 2½ kmph + 2 kmph = 4½ kmph

          Distance = Speed x Time

          18 km = 4.5 kmph x Time

          18 km/4.5 kmph = Time

          4hrs = Time

2) A man travels ¾th of the distance of his journey by bus, 1/6th by rickshaw and 2 km on foot. The total distance travelled by the man is: [SSC CGL Exam 08/09/2016]

          a) 12 km

          b) 18 km

          c) 20 km

          d) 24 km

Suppose Total Distance ‘D’

          (3/4)D + (1/6)D + 2 = D

          3D/4 + D/6 + 2 = D

          D – (3D/4 + D/6) = 2

          12D – (9D + 2D)/12 = 2

          12D – 11D = 24

          D = 24

3) To cover a certain distance with a speed of 60 kmph, a train takes 15 hours. If it covers the same distance in 12 hours, what will be its speed? [SSC CGL Exam 09/09/2016]

          a) 65 kmph

          b) 70 kmph

          c) 75 kmph

          d) 80 kmph

          Distance = Speed x Time

          Distance = 60 kmph x 15 hrs

          Distance = 900 km

          Distance = Speed x Time

          900 km = Speed x 12 hrs

          900 km/12 hrs = Speed

          75 kmph = Speed

4) Sound travels at 330 meters per second. The distance (in kilometer) of a thunder cloud when its sound follows the flash after 10 seconds is: [SSC CGL Exam 10/09/2016]

          a) 0.33 km

          b) 3.3 km

          c) 33 km

          d) 33.3 km

          Distance = Speed x Time

          Distance = 330 mps x 10 Sec

          Distance = 3300 meters

          Distance = 3.3 km

5) Walking at 3/5 of his usual speed, a person reaches his office 20 minutes late than the usual time. His usual time in minutes is: [SSC CGL Exam 12/06/2019, Shift II]

          b) 30

          c) 20

          d) 40

          [3/ (5-3)] x 20

          [3/2] x 20

          3 x (20/2)

          3 x 10

          30

          b) 54

          c) 72

          d) 45

          [3/ (4-3)] x 18

          [3/1] x 18

          3 x 18

          54

          30

7) Walking at 5/7 of his usual speed, a person reaches his office 10 minutes late than the usual time. His usual time in minutes is: [SSC CGL Exam 13/06/2019, Shift I]

          a) 28

          b) 25

          c) 30

          d) 35

          [5/ (7-5)] x 10

          [5/2] x 10

          5 x (10/2)

          5 x 5

          25

8) A and B are 20 km apart. A can walk at an average speed of 4 kmph and B at 6 kmph. If they start walking towards each other at 7 a.m., when they will meet? [SSC CGL Exam 19/10/2014, Shift I]

          a) 8.00 a.m.

          b) 8.30 a.m.

          c) 9.00 a.m.

          d) 10.00 a.m.

          A Speed + B Speed is 4 kmph + 6 kmph = 10 kmph

          They can walk 10 km in one hour. To walk next 10 km, they can take another one hour

          To walk 20 km, they can take 2 hours. So 7 a.m + 2 hours is 9 a.m

9) A train travels 500 meters in first minutes. In each minute 125 meters more than that in the previous minute. The average speed per hour of the train during those 5 minutes will be [SSC CGL Exam 30/08/2015]

          a) 30 kmph

          b) 45 kmph

          c) 50 kmph

          d) 55 kmph

          (500 x 5) + [125(1+2+3+4)]

          2500 + 125(10)

          2500 + 1250

          3750

          Distance is 3750 meters

          Distance = Speed x Time

          3750 m = Speed x 5 min

          3750 m = Speed x 5 x 60 Sec

(3750/300) mps = Speed

(3750/300) x (18/5) kmph = Speed

45 kmph = Speed
